Selkirk Weed Control District (SWCD) – Seasonal Worker/Pesticide Applicator

The SWCD is searching for a Seasonal Worker/Pesticide Applicator for the 2021 summer season, with the potential for re-hiring on an annual basis. Positions are suited to hard-working adult students or persons looking for reliable seasonal work that may have experience operating equipment, using pesticides or working outdoors. The SWCD is a municipal organization consisting of the R.M. of St. Andrews, R.M. of St. Clements, City of Selkirk, and Town of Winnipeg Beach. We are primarily involved in enforcing the Noxious Weeds Act through monitoring, mowing and herbicide application on properties and roadsides in the District.


DUTIES:
• Assist the Weed Control Supervisor in delivery of the District Weed Control Programs
• Operate weed control equipment (sprayers and mowers)
• Keep daily records of all activities performed and regularly report to the Supervisor
• Maintain the shop, tools, vehicles, and equipment in safe and working order


QUALIFICATIONS:
Must have a valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s License. Must have or be willing and able to obtain a Pesticide Applicators License (Rural Municipal) by start date. Must be able to safely operate equipment including an all-terrain vehicle with sprayer, 0-turn turf mower, 100 hp tractor and rotary mower. Must be willing and able to work outdoors independently with minimal direct supervision. Should be willing to start work early in the morning and work overtime if necessary.


Additional Assets: Previous experience in equipment operation or pesticide application. Mechanical skills with any of the following: trucks, mowers, ATVs, or tractors. Knowledge of weed identification and the use of herbicides. Familiarity of the R.M. of St. Andrews, R.M. of St. Clements and City of Selkirk areas.


EMPLOYMENT PERIOD: (14 weeks) May 31, 2021 until September 3, 2021, with possible extension into autumn. Training sessions and applicator exams are held in May (compensated)


Wage: $17 – $20 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience
